Beliefs

We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the inspired and inerrant revelation of God and that Jesus Christ is the only hope for humanity. His work in His life, death, and resurrection is the only basis for acceptance by God. Faith alone is the only way to receive the benefits of Christ’s work. Good works are always done in gratitude for the salvation that Christ has already accomplished and can do nothing to justify anyone in the sight of God. We believe that there is nothing within fallen humanity that moved God to provide salvation. God’s grace alone is the reason for the salvation which He provides through Christ. A more complete description of our beliefs can be found in the Westminster Confession of Faith and in it’s Larger and Shorter Catechisms.

Worship

Humanity was created to worship God. The only way to find true meaning in life is through worshiping and serving God. Consequently, corporate worship figures prominently into our activities at Providence. God has provided means to commune with Him through the preaching of His Word, baptism, and the Lord’s Supper. The Bible teaches us what we need to know about God including how to worship Him. Because of this we worship God with reverence, but also with great joy. Our worship is responsive. We hear from God through the preached Word and sacraments and we respond back to him with song, prayer, and cheerful giving. We believe that worship is a family event and we rejoice that God gives both the youngest and the oldest the privilege of communing with Him in public worship.

Church Life

God has given the church not only as a means to fellowship with Himself, but also with one another. Fellowship is an important part of the Christian life because the Holy Spirit indwells and equips believers with gifts and abilities that the whole body of Christ needs. At Providence we promote and encourage fellowship within the body of Christ. Here, there are families and individuals who know their own need for God’s grace, and who therefore involve themselves in a Christ-centered community of fellowship and service.

Pastor York

Adam York is the pastor of Providence OPC. He grew up in Memphis Tennessee and attended the University of Tennessee (Knoxville) where he met his wife, Pamela. Adam went to seminary at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido California. Adam currently lives with his wife, Pamela, and his daughter, Anna, in Kingwood Texas.

The OPC

Providence is a member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. The OPC was founded in 1936 as a Presbyterian church that would faithfully preach the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. The word “Orthodox” does not refer to the Greek or Russian Orthodox Churches. Rather, it comes from two words from the Greek language. The Greek word related to “ortho” means “straight” and the word related to “dox” means “thought”. The Orthodox Presbyterian Church has always put a high priority on trying to think “straightly” or rightly about God. Our ultimate authority in this task is the inspired Scripture of the Old and New Testaments. The OPC also subscribes to the Westminster standards.
